Land masses and water bodies Edit

The earth is spherical in shape. It is flat at the poles. Its diameter is approximately 13 730 kilometers (km). Earth’s surface is made up of land masses and water bodies. There is much more water than land on earth, 29.4 percent is land and 70.6percent is water. The land is divided into continents and islands, and the water is divided into oceans, seas, lakes and rivers.

Continents are very large land masses. There are seven continents on the earth namely:

Asia Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Australia.

Size of the continents

Size in square

South America 17 767 331
Asia 48 393 963
Africa 30 300 293
North America 24 436 555
Antarctica 13 726 947
Europe 13 986 280
Australia 7 768 000

Islands are small land masses completely surrounded by water. It may be very large as Greenland or as small as the Caribbean islands. A string of islands is called an archipelago. The Caribbean archipelago is one example.

     Oceans, Seas and Rivers

Oceans are large sheets of salt water which border the continents. There are five oceans: Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Arctic, and Southern Ocean. The Pacific Ocean covers approximately one half of the earth’s surface.

Oceans and their sizes

Size in Square Kilometre

 Atlantic Ocean 82 217 000
Indian Ocean 73 481 000
Pacific Ocean 165 384 000
Arctic 14 o56 000
Southern Ocean 20 300 000

A sea is a sheet of salt water usually connected to an ocean. Example the caribbean sea is connected to the Atlantic Ocean.

River Edit

Rivers are bodies of fresh water flowing through a channel from a source to a mouth. The source of the river is usually located in a highland area or a mountain and the mouth  is usually found at the coast. Some rivers on the continents are so long and so wide that large ships sail on them. Rivers like the mississippi in North America and the Rhine in  Europe are used heavily as a transport routes. Rivers are valuable to humans in other ways because they provide water that satisfies a number of our needs, and they contain a varity of fishes that supply us with foods.
